About Us
Our Story
The idea of keki-Mawe came when we had seen the high prevalence of eating dirt or clay (Pica) among pregnant women and children in Malawi. Pica is a sign of severe malnutrition in people, mostly comes as a result of lack of iron and calcium in the body. About 2.5 million children and close to 1 million women in Malawi suffer from chronic malnutrtion in Malawi due to poverty and lack of access to nutritioius food and awareness about healthy eating habits. The soil that women and
children eat usually has a lot of worms and lead, which are also bad for health and development of the child.
As such, recognising this problem of geophagia and high levels of maternal and childhood anaemia, we developed iron-fortified biscuits and powders that mimic the existing cravings of people eating non-food materials (eg the soil) as a means to deliver nutritious food products and supplement their nutrition needs.
We are driven by social impact
We envision a world that is free from malnutrition, anaemia and hunger, especially among women and children in Malawi. We recognise the need for nutritious food that is always affordable and available to people, especially in sub-Saharan Africa where money and resources for food production are scarce. As such, Keki-Mawe stands to empower communities with nutritious food, health education and other resources that can help to alleviate hunger, poverty and malnutrition.
